1 Thessalonians 5:1-14

The Day of the Lord

¹ Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, ² for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. ³ While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

⁴ But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. ⁵ You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. ⁶ So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. ⁷ For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.

⁸ But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. ⁹ For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. ¹⁰ He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. ¹¹ Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Final Instructions

¹² Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. ¹³ Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. ¹⁴ And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

Here's a glance on our anniversary

YP Retreat '09

Before the classes begun last June, we had our Annual YP Retreat. We spend a night at RJ Beach Resort in Balaring. We arrived there at around 5pm and then set the place for the night. Everybody helped clean the cottage and prepare our dinner. We had a great time eating dinner and sharing our food.

We started the program with some songs and prayer. Jeff shared with us a topic about worship and gave a little quiz after. Then we also played some games until we were all exhausted and ready to doze off.
We started the morning with a prayer and sharing the Word of God. Bboy lead the morning devotion about doing everything for the Glory of God. Then everybody helped prepare breakfast.

After eating, we are all ready for a swim but not after we've all transferred our things to another cottage, which has the best view of the place, then we all jump into the waves. Just before lunch time, it rained hard so our lunch was delayed a little. Thanks to Pie who cooked her special menu, we had a great lunch. We went home at around 2pm. The road was muddy and slippery but thank God we traveled safely. We had a wonderful time spent with God and with friends.

Shiloh Christian Fellowship Barotac Viejo 21st Church Anniversary

Last September 20, 2008, the Shiloh Family joined our church in Barotac Viejo to celebrate our 21st Anniversary of God's faithfulness.

We are thankful that God sustained us for the past years, though we faced trials and difficulties in our walk with God, He never left us and He made us conquerors. The church has started 21 years ago and is still growing and continuing to serve God and fulfilling what He has commissioned us. This year's theme is "Standing Firm on God's Eternal Word."

The Music Team led the Call to Worship with the song "I Stand in awe of You".

Scripture reading was lead by Vivian, reading from the Book of Psalms and followed by an opening prayer by Jeff.

"A Christian always has a story to tell," a story of how God changed lives and how God worked mysteriously in each one of us. Michelle shared her testimony of how God became her personal Lord and Savior. She narrated how she became a child of God and how God helped her get through life's hurdles and how God gave her the strength to endure the problems faced by their family. Most were teary-eyed or even cried with Michelle as she testified God's greatness in her life.

Our Pastor, Rev. Gunder Malan, welcomed the visitors from other Shiloh Churches. Pastors from other Shiloh Churches are there to join our celebration, some are from the other side of Iloilo like Miag-ao and Tigbauan, while others are from the Island of Guimaras. The Young People of Barotac Viejo gave a special number, singing the song "Who Am I" by Casting Crowns and interpreted into dance by Kristi and Lauren.

Praise&Worship was led by Glorry Mae together with the music team, Aaron on guitar, Edbarr on bass, Jeff on drums and Lauren on keyboards. The Awesome presence of the Lord filled the place, it was a great moment -- praising and thanking God for all His blessings. The speaker for the celebration is Bishop Oscar F. Sta. Lucia, the founder of Shiloh Christian Fellowship. Pastor Oscar talked about why we should stand firm on God's eternal word.

After the service everybody enjoyed a sumptuous lunch and everyone's fellowship.

The anniversary celebration was a success and we will continue to praise and thank God for His abundant blessings and goodness to our church. All Glory and Praises be to God!

A Penny

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house.

The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband.

He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts.

Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up? Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her.

Finally, she could stand it no longer. She causally mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value.

A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?

"Look at it." He said. "Read what it says."

She read the words "United States of America."

"No, not that; read further."

"One cent?"

"No, keep reading."

"In God we Trust?"

"Yes!"

"And?"

"And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, "In God We Trust," and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message. It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful!

And, God is patient...

The Shiloh Christian Fellowship, Inc. celebrated its 23rd Church Anniversary and Thanksgiving last October 7, 2007 at the CAP Auditorium in Iloilo City. This is a yearly activity for Shiloh, wherein all daughter churches gather at the City Church for the celebration. SCFI was founded by Bishop Oscar Sta. Lucia in Iloilo City on 1984. For 23 years Shiloh has planted many daughter churches in the province of Iloilo and is continuing to expand through God's grace.

Shiloh Barotac's Church Anniversary

Last Saturday, September 15, 2007, Shiloh Christian Fellowship Barotac Viejo celebrated its 20th church anniversary. With the theme "Empowering Christians in this changing world," we were inspired by our speaker, Bishop Oscar Sta. Lucia. The program was started with a motorcade from the church and passed through the main streets of the town and to the municipal covered gym. Visitors from other Shiloh churches also joined the motorcade. The celebration was also graced by Municipal Mayor Raul "boboy" Tupas, who gave the welcome address.
Visitors and guests were entertained by 2 special numbers from the tambourine dancers and the adult choir of Shiloh Barotac Viejo.
The members of Shiloh were fervently praying for a good weather that day, God is really great that He heard our prayers and let the sun shine that day. The weather was good and everybody enjoyed the gathering plus a sumptuous lunch, we got the visitors wanting for more!hehe :)
All in all the celebration was a success. To God be the glory!

God's Angel

Jan Schlebusch, a wonderful man of God from South Africa, is one of the tens of thousands of volunteers who have shown "JESUS," using either 16 mm or on video.

Jan had taken a most risky step. He was about to show "JESUS" to a small group of hardened criminals in a maximum security prison in South Africa. He was alone in a room with the "toughest of the tough" - robbers, rapists and murderers. Several of them were "lifers." Jan knew that any one of the prisoners could easily slit his throat with a knife when he dimmed the lights to show "JESUS."

However, despite the pressure he felt, Jan was obedient. As the story unfolded many of the prisoners mocked and swore at the screen. Their language was foul and offensive. Gradually, they quieted down and became more interested in the story. Then an astounding thing happened.

During the crucifixion, several began to weep. By the time the prayer of invitation was completed, hardened criminals - EVERY ONE OF THEM - were on their knees, sobbing, asking God to forgive them, praying to invite Christ into their lives.

Shocked and amazed, Jan wasn't sure what has just happened. He turned his head to the corner of the room...startled by the sight. Standing before him was an awesome being, 10-feet tall, robed in brilliant white...an angel. Jan said the angel's face was obscured. He could see nothing above the angel's shoulders. This messenger of God lifted up his hand and pointed a finger directly toward Jan: "You see, Jan, all you must do is be available and do the work."

Instantly, the angel vanished --but not the sense of awe that was engulfing Jan. He had seen the Living God at work, pouring out His love upon those for whom He died to save. And he had witnessed the greatest miracle of all. He had seen the vilest of sinners being born from above, becoming righteous in Jesus.

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. Psalm 145:3

Man: Good or Evil?

Man by nature is evil. Nature is defined as inherent tendencies of a person or in other words "instinct." Instincts are acts where thinking or reasoning is excluded. This is sometimes referred to as "gut feeling" or for women it's "women's intuition." In example, if someone throws a stone at you, "instinctively" what will you do? Without thinking, we would respond to this in the same manner and would throw back a stone. Other examples are; when we were born, they say that our clenched fist symbolizes our greediness, any person abused or hurt would result to violence, revenge and hate. Our nature or flesh (as in the bible), which is evil will never get along with the spirit, which is good. Gal. 5:16-17 says, "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For⁽ the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do."
I say man in nature is evil because the bible says in gal. 5:19, "You know what comes from the flesh: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality... jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21envy, drunkenness, etc." The word "comes" from the flesh tells us that the things are inherent to the flesh, while on the spirit they are referred to as fruits, which means something that takes time, effort and is a result. One saying often heard is "there is always a good in every man," which explains that human is full of evil but the spirit convicts us to do good.
If man by nature is good, what comes into our mind when we see our enemy? What comes out of our mouths when we are angry or insulted? What do we do when we hate someone?

Man is evil. Man is sinful and only God is good, citing the words of Jesus in Mark 10:18, "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone." That's why we need a savior to save us from the evil we are in, and we need to follow Him to be like Him; perfect and holy. Lastly, I'll quote Romans 3:10, "As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one."

Summer Camp

Every year, Shiloh Christian Fellowship Inc. is having its Summer Youth Camp. This year's camp was entitled "Thirst for God" where young people quenched their thirst for serving God. We had visitors from other countries like New Zealand and Australia. We were inspired by our speaker Brother Steve Dunne, who taught us how to surrender our lives to God and to take a step in saying yes to God's calling in service of our church and our country. Everybody had a great time, enjoying God's presence, participating in every game prepared by the staff, displaying their talents and skills on every contest and even having fun at the beach.

Youth is not a time of life - it is a state of mind, it is a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over love of
ease.

Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. People grow old only by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair -
these are the long, long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.

Whether they are sixteen or seventy, there is in every being's heart the love of wonder, the sweet amazement at the stars and starlike things and
thoughts, the undaunted challenge of events, the unfailing childlike appetite for what is to come next, and the joy and the game of life.

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as old as your despair. When the wires are all down and all the innermost core of your heart is covered with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then you are grown old indeed.

THE OTHER FORGOTTEN 10 COMMANDMENTS

10. Thou shall count thy blessings, never overlooking the small ones, for a lot of small blessings add up to a big one.
